Family photo sessions don’t have to feel overwhelming or stressful. With a little prep (and the right mindset!), your session can actually be fun—and result in photos you’ll love for years to come.

As a family photographer (and a mom myself), I’ve seen firsthand what works and what causes unnecessary stress. Here’s how to prepare for your family session so it feels smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable.

1. Plan Outfits Ahead of Time

The number one stressor? What to wear. Planning outfits early makes everything easier.

✨ Pro tip: Lay all outfits out on the bed together to make sure everything flows.

2. Dress for Comfort (Especially Kids!)

If your kids aren’t comfortable, it will show in the photos.

Make sure clothes fit well and aren’t itchy or restrictive

Test outfits before session day

Let kids wear shoes they can walk and play in

Happy kids = relaxed photos.

3. Talk to Your Kids About the Session

Let them know what to expect! Keep it light and positive.

Try saying:

“We’re going to hang out, play, and take some fun pictures together.”

Avoid putting pressure on them to “behave” or “smile perfectly.” I’ll guide them naturally during the session.

4. Bring a Few Essentials

You don’t need much, but these can be lifesavers:

Snacks (mess-free ones!)

Water

Wipes or tissues

A small comfort item for toddlers if needed

If we’re shooting outdoors, consider bug spray or sunscreen beforehand.

5. Rest + Timing Matter

A well-rested family makes a huge difference.

Avoid scheduling during nap times

Try not to plan anything stressful right before

Give yourself extra time to get ready so no one feels rushed

Sessions go best when everyone arrives calm and unrushed.

6. Trust the Process (and Let Go of Perfection)

Some of the best photos happen in between moments—the giggles, the cuddles, the chaos.

Your job?

Love on your people

Laugh with your kids

Trust me to handle the rest

You don’t need perfect smiles. You just need connection.

7. Come Ready to Have Fun

Family sessions aren’t about stiff poses—they’re about real moments.

I’ll guide you every step of the way, but the magic happens when you relax and enjoy being together. The more fun you have, the more beautiful your photos will be.
